You were just adorned with a henna tattoo and you want to know how to make this temporary body art LAST! The main trick is making sure you get a nice dark stain from the beginning. This is because the darker the stain, the longer your henna tattoo will last. The old saying goes "the darker the stain, the stronger the love" when they are speaking about bridal henna art. So everyone always wants the darkest stain possible! So let's dive in.
Darker Henna = Longer Stain
In order to get the longest lasting stain, you'll want to act quick to get the darkest stain possible out of your developing henna paste. These directions begin right after your henna paste is applied by your artist.
Stay Warm for Dark Henna
Don't Pick Flaking Henna
The quickest way to make henna stop developing is getting cold or a chill. So stay warm and keep the AC vent or fans off the developing henna paste. This means the sun is good for it, it likes that heat! Just try not to drip sweat.
Wrap the Henna Stain
Once you are ready for bed and have flaked all your henna paste off, you are now left with just the light orange henna stain. This stain will develop over the next 48 hrs, so the darker it becomes the longer it will last. If you want to wrap your henna in a breathable cloth or sock during sleep it can help it stay warm and develop well, but it's not necessary.

If your henna is beginning to flake or peel off thats okay and totally normal. Let the henna paste do it's thing, in it's time, and try not to pick or flake it off until you're ready for bed.
No Water on the Henna Tat
Don't get your henna wet until the next morning! So before bed flake off or scrape the henna paste with a card, or use oil to moisturize it off. Just do not put water on the henna paste or stain!
This will really help it develop dark overnight as your body temperature rising during sleep. The next morning you may wash as normal.
Pat Your Henna Stain Dry
To keep your henna stain lasting long, pat it dry and do not wipe it dry. wiping creates exfoliation which will wear your tattoo off faster.
Moisturize Your Henna Stain for a Long Lasting Tattoo
To extend the life of your temporary body art, make sure to keep your skin moisturized. Henna permanently stains the upper layers of the skin. We shed our skin as it becomes dry and dies, it flakes off and with it comes your henna stain.
So keep your skin moisturized and avoid exfoliating for a long lasting henna tattoo!
