Why Is My Henna Flaking Off?

While it might seem alarming, this is actually a completely normal and exciting part of the natural henna process. The journey of a natural henna tattoo begins when a paste, made from the crushed leaves of the henna plant, is applied to skin. At this point the dye molecules are released into the skin and begin to stain the outermost layer — the epidermis. As the paste dries, it hardens and forms a protective shell over the design and can withstand bending and some brushing against things.

This then begins to flake off but it actually isn't the tattoo "coming off"—it's the dried paste shedding to reveal the beautiful stain underneath! The flaking process is a positive indicator that the dye has successfully been transferred. The resulting stain will initially look a vibrant orange. Over the next days, as the stain oxidizes, it will deepen into a rich, reddish-brown color that lasts 1 to 2 weeks.

What to do when your design begins to flake off

When your henna design begins to flake it can be a worry, but all is well. This is the process! For this staining process to be successful, the paste needs to remain on your skin, allowing the dye to fully penetrate. It's really best to let the henna paste flake off on it's own throughout the course of the day. Any stubborn areas could be removed before sleeping.
